  • Abdi Banda is allegedly owed R1.2 million by Chippa United after joining in July 2022
  • The club will not be able to sign any new players for a timeframe undisclosed by FIFA
  • Chippa narrowly escaped relegation last season and are set for a repeat performance

Chippa United will need to navigate a possible relegation battle without the aid of new recruits after being given a transfer ban by FIFA.

The ban stems from a dispute between the club and Tanzanian player, Abdi Banda, who claims he is owed R1.2 million in unpaid earnings.

The news will dent the confidence of the Chilli Boys, who would have hoped to bring in fresh faces to ensure their DStv Premiership status is maintained.

Banda has since left the club to join Richards Bay FC but refused to give up on the substantial amount owed by Chippa, as reported by The Citizen.

The former Mtibwa Sugar defender has made seven appearances for Natal Rich Boys since leaving the Eastern Cape and along with the financial loss, currently sees himself looking up at Chippa on the table.

Last season, Chippa avoided the relegation playoff on goal difference. By the narrowest of margins, they finished just one goal better than Maritzburg United, who ultimately went down.

Chippa's log position is not immediately alarming, having already earned half as many points as they did last season, but their next four games are vital before the lengthy January break.

Two games against fellow bottom-halfers, TS Galaxy and Sekhukhune United, combined with two games against top-half Golden Arrows and Polokwane City, will determine their strategy for 2024.

An early season look at the DSTV Premiership

Sports Brief recently compiled an update on the DSTV Premiership standings as of the last international break of the year.

The DStv Premiership has an uneven look to it with large disparities between the amounts of games played by each team.

Despite not playing a DStv Premiership match in seven weeks, Sundowns were still top of the table with a one-point lead.
