DStv Premiership Awards: Mokwena, Khenyeza Receive Accolades for Efforts in Premiership

An international pause allows for a chance to take stock.

The Premier Soccer League used the FIFA window to acknowledge the work of the finest examples of domestic footballing excellence.

Players and coaches were up for individual awards as well as the Goal of the Month for that exceptionally well-hit screamer.

Two panels of six judges deliberated for the respective periods: August as well as a combined award for September and October.

Sports broadcasters and journalists, Carol Tshabalala, Tshepang Mailwane, Malibongwe Mdletshe, Neville Khoza, Nkululeko Dladla, and Grant Bisset were on the August panel.

They awarded Rulani Mokwena the Coach of the Month prize for Mamelodi Sundown's unbeaten start to the season, beating out the nearest candidate, Gavin Hunt.

Lucas Ribeiro Costa was given the DStv Premiership Player of the Month award for his efforts in August, scoring four goals in six games.

The Goal of the Month for August went to Kaizer Chiefs' Pule Mmodi for his 25-yard rocket against Stellenbosch FC at the Athlone Stadium.

Mabuthi Khenyeza became the first Golden Arrows coach since Clinton Larson to pick up the Coach of the Month award when he got the nod for September and October.

The panel for this section were journalists, BBK Kortjaas, Thabo Kofa, Bruno Letsogo, Xoli Zondo, Lorenz Kohler, and Sthembiso Dindie.

The panel rewarded hat-trick hero, Bradley Grobler as the Player of the September and October phase, while Samir Nurkovic won Goal of the Month.

As per the press release sent out by the PSL, the winners each received a trophy and R7,000 courtesy of league sponsor, DStv.

An early season look at the DSTV Premiership

Sports Brief recently compiled an update on the DSTV Premiership standings as of the last international break of the year.

The DStv Premiership has an uneven look to it with large disparities between the amounts of games played by each team.

Despite not playing a DStv Premiership match in seven weeks, Sundowns were still top of the table with a one-point lead.
