The organisers of the Sir Bobby Charlton funeral held in Accra on Tuesday have explained the reason for the event.
The former Manchester United and England legend was given a befitting send-off in Accra while a procession was held for him in England.
Sir Bobby Charlton died on October 21, 2023, at the age of 86.
Mr Abraham Boakye, popularly known as One Man Supporter, was the group leader who held a funeral for the Englishman.
According to One Man Supporter, Sir Bobby Charlton was the man who gave him the name and wanted to pay homage to the World Cup winner in a spectacular way.
“Sir Bobby Charlton of Manchester United gave me the name lives, which influenced my life and the life’s of many Ghanaians," he told Sikka Sports.
He disclosed that back in 1995, at the U17 FIFA World Cup tournament in Ecuador, he was the only Ghanaian supporting the Black Starlets, and from a commentary position, Sir Boby Charlton spotted him, leading to the name One Man Supporter.
Hundreds of Ghanaians were present at the memorial, crying and wailing as they paid tribute to the late footballer.
“Both the Ghana Football Association and the Sports Ministry could not show up for the funeral after inviting them," added Mr Boakye.
“We decided to celebrate Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton's funeral here in Ghana to show appreciation."
In England, former Manchester United players and manager Sir Alex Ferguson were present at the final funeral of Bobby Charlton. as reported by the BBC.
