He had joined the Blues in 2020 after scoring over 70 league goals in four years in Germany. Despite a promising start under Frank Lampard, his high-profile misses became the talk of the town as he eventually finished his spell at Chelsea with only 10 goals in 56 appearances, as per Transfermarkt.

Timo Werner's second stint in Germany

His second spell at Leipzig hasn't gone down well either, with a combination of injuries and 'better' strikers keeping him out of Marco Rose's squad.

Lois Openda, Benjamin Sesko and Yussuf Poulsen have all been started ahead of the German, who has had to contend with minutes off the bench. He has two goals this season in 13 appearances.

Speaking to German outlet Spox, Leipzig sporting director Rouven Schroder admitted of Werner's struggles.

"We look carefully at our squad, and we want players who have that something a bit different in their heads. Those are the types of players who we will pick. Timo is going through a difficult spell, and we are supporting him. Life isn't always sunshine."

Newcastle United were interested in the 27-year-old before Leipzig resigned him. The Magpies are currently hit with an injury crisis, with both of their strikers, Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson, out until after the international break or late December.

Tuchel blamed for Werner's Chelsea woes

Sports Brief has previously reported that former Chelsea striker Timo Werner slammed Thomas Tuchel's tactics during his time in England. Werner spent two years at Chelsea, where he won the Champions League in 2021, before returning to RB Leipzig.

The striker has now faulted Tuchel for forgetting about him, leading to his decision to quit the club early this season. Tuchel was sacked in early September, with Graham Potter taking his place.
