Carling Knockout Cup: A preview of the weekend's quarter-final contests
FootballHow the DStv Premiership Table Looks After Seven Weeks Without Mamelodi Sundowns
- Mamelodi Sundowns have not played a DStv Premiership game since September 27
- Masandawana have played nine domestic and continental cup games in seven weeks
- Sundowns' next DStv Premiership game is the Tshwane derby with SuperSport United
Cramming in fixtures is hard when one is always in demand.
The DStv Premiership has an uneven look to it with large disparities between the amounts of games played by each team.
Cup competitions have wrought havoc on the early phases of the league, but the bonus is the added dynamic of fixture congestion and endurance.
Despite not playing a DStv Premiership match in seven weeks, Mamelodi Sundowns still sit at the top of the table with a one-point lead.
SuperSport United are the team on their tail, but Masandawana have four games in hand. The potential gap could become a gulf if Sundowns win their next match, the Tshwane Derby with SuperSport on November 29.
The big game before the international window was the Soweto Derby won by Orlando Pirates. The Buccaneers are a point ahead of Kaizer Chiefs but have two games in hand.
Chiefs now sit in 10th, after being leapfrogged by Amazulu who beat Golden Arrows 3-1, and Chippa United who earned a draw against Stellenbosch FC.
Cape Town City are the form team in the league having won their last five. Moroka Swallows have two matches in hand over SuperSport and City and could pull level if they turn those into wins.
Cape Town Spurs are rooted to the bottom after a 1-0 defeat away to Richards Bay, eight points away from Royal AM and safety.
With Richards Bay on nine points, Royal AM and TS Galaxy are within touching distance on 12, although the latter teams do have a game in hand.
Kaizer Chiefs are just five points from the relegation zone and face Swallows, Polokwane City and Richards Bay in their next three matches.
