His wife, Sofia Balbi, hails from Italian heritage, and Suarez successfully completed the exam at the University of Perugia.
The prospect of gaining Italian citizenship would have been highly advantageous for Juventus, as it would have classified him as an EU player.

At one instance, it appeared that Suarez was handed a piece of paper containing what one might assume were answers. Furthermore, several university staff members later sought pictures and autographs from him.
The university's director Simone Olivieri, along with three professors, were hit with eight-month suspensions as a result of their conduct.

The agreement collapsed, and Suarez ultimately joined Atletico Madrid, where he scored 34 goals in 83 games and secured another La Liga title.
