Megan Rapinoe’s farewell football game had a disheartening ending as the two-time World Cup winner had to go off after three minutes with injury.
Rapinoe was in the starting XI for the NWSL final between OL Reign and Gotham FC.
But the 38-year old veteran went down after just three minutes with a suspected torn Achilles tendon.
Prior to the game, Rapinoe went on record to say the game between OL Reign and Gotham FC “was really the last one”.
Speaking on her unfortunate ending to her footballing stint, Rapinoe described it as “the worst possible outcome", saying, as per TalkSport.
“I just thank god I have like a f---ing deep well of sense of humor, but yeah, I mean, just obviously devastating to go out in the final so early."
The game ended in favour of Gotham FC, who claimed a 2-1 win over OL Reign - a result that ensured Rapinoe would not win her first NWSL Championship of her career.
She has won NWSL Shield three times in a decade with OL Reign, winning the NWSL Shield three times but never the Championship.
