  • Girona has witnessed a blistering start to the 2023-24 season
  • The Catalan minnows are currently top of the Spanish La Liga
  • Michel's side have joined an exclusive list following the victory against Rayo Vallecano

Girona's impressive start to the 2023-24 La Liga campaign continues, as they secured a victory against Rayo Vallecano.

The Catalan underdogs, led by former Vallecano manager Miguel Angel Sanchez Munoz (Michel), orchestrated a comeback victory thanks to Ukrainian striker Artem Dovbyk, who cancelled out Alvaro Garcia's early goal in the 42nd minute, and young Brazilian Savio Oliveira sealed the win with a top-corner finish in the 62nd minute.

As per ESPN reports, Michel's team's hard-fought win not only extended their lead over title contenders Real Madrid to five points but also created an opportunity to widen the gap further if Carlo Ancelotti's men falter against Valencia.

Nevertheless, the victory, which propelled Girona to 34 points, granted the Catalan side membership into an exclusive La Liga club.

Girona joins exclusive La Liga club

According to Opta Jose's data, Girona became the fourth team in La Liga history to win 11 of their first 13 matches in a season.

Joining the ranks of Real Madrid (accomplishing this feat seven times), Barcelona (six times), and Atletico Madrid (twice), Michel's team showcased their prowess.

While sceptics may argue that Girona is overachieving, credit must be given to the team, especially considering the departure of key players like striker Taty Castellanos and midfielder Oriol Romeu, who were lured away by other European giants earlier in the summer.

Girona seal comeback against Osasuna

In a previous report, Sports Brief stated that Girona produced a brilliant comeback to beat Osasuna 4-2 in a thriller on Saturday and provisionally move top of La Liga.

The Catalan minnows' Ukrainian duo Artem Dovbyk and Viktor Tsygankov's goals helped Girona triumph from 2-1 down to move three points ahead of Real Madrid, who faced Rayo Vallecano on Sunday.

Ivan Martin sent the visitors ahead but Osasuna striker, Ante Budimir netted twice to turn the game on its head before Dovbyk and Tsygankov intervened and Aleix Garcia made the game safe in stoppage time.
