Orlando Pirates have ended their five-match losing streak in the Soweto derby when they handed Kaizer Chiefs a 1-0 defeat at FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Evidence Makgopa scored the only goal of the game in the 20th minute in the highly entertaining fixture.
The victory takes Pirates above their rivals on the PSL standings to 7th position with 15 points, while Chiefs are 8th with 14 points.
It is the second loss for Cavin Johnson, who was recently appointed to take over from the ousted Molefi Ntseki on an interim basis.
The visitors dominated most parts of the first half, but Chiefs improved in the final five minutes of the stanza, creating an imperative for a spirited comeback in the second half.
They battled hard to restore parity, but somehow the Bucs defence was resolute, and that was how it ended: Kaizer Chiefs 0-1 Orlando Pirates.
Times Live reports that it was not the ideal way for Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson to celebrate his 65th birthday.
The tactician made two changes to the team that beat Cape Town City 3-2 with Zitha Kwinika and Sibongiseni Mthethwa replacing Reeve Frosler and Mduduzi Shabalala.
Johnson went for experience between the poles with veteran goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune, and he also showed faith in midfielder Nkosingiphile Ngcobo and striker Ranga Chavaviro.
Pitso Mosimane linked with Kaizer Chiefs' job
Sports Brief earlier reported that it has been stated that the Chiefs' hierarchy would love for Johnson to revert back to his initial role of Head of Youth, which he was appointed last season.
Raul Caneda of Spain is among the coaches linked with the job, amid claims the tactician has already been offered the position.
Further reports have mentioned Pitso Mosimane, former Amakhosi coach Muhsin Ertugral, and Nasreddine Nabi of Tunisia, whom the club was negotiating with prior to Ntseki’s appointment.
