Jamie Carragher is not allowing Lionel Messi to enjoy his 2023 Ballon d'Or win and has already named four players he thinks are favourites to win the 2024 edition.

Messi won his record-extending eighth award last week, edging out competition from Erling Haaland and former Paris Saint-Germain teammate, Kylian Mbappe.

The Argentina captain has not even spent a month on the throne, yet names are beginning to fly around about which player will ascend to the top next.

English pundit Jamie Carragher, speaking on CBS Sports Golazo after the UEFA Champions League round four, dropped names he thinks would battle for the award: Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Haaland, and Mbappe.

"[Bellingham] plays for a club who have got a great opportunity of winning the European Cup. Kylian Mbappe would have a great opportunity as well, and who knows? He's playing for a team that has a great opportunity to win the Champions League," he said.

"Out of those top four names right now, I think it would be really difficult for Haaland to win it because of the country he plays for. Unless maybe Manchester City do another treble, or he's amazing in the Champions League again. The other players I've just mentioned have probably got another opportunity with the tournament in the summer."

France have qualified for Euro 2024, England is on the verge of qualification, but Norway have a long path to qualification, which could limit Haaland's chances.

Per Sportskeeda, all four have started the season strongly. Kopa Trophy winner, Bellingham has 13 goals in 14 goals for Madrid, while Kane has scored 19 in 15 games for Bayern Munich.

Messi beat Haaland by 105 points

The World Cup winner had 462 points, while the Man City striker had 357 points. Both men received number 1 votes from their nations, Argentina and Norway, respectively.
