  • Manchester United suffered a devastating blow to their Champions League campaign
  • Copenhagen came from two goals down to claim a dramatic 4-3 victory on Wednesday
  • It was yet another game that was marred by VAR controversy

Manchester United fans have come out to claim the “system is against us” after their side dramatically lost to FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday, November 8.

The chaotic match saw seven goals go in as the Red Devils blew a two-goal lead in a devastating second-half collapse.

Everything seemed to change for Erik ten Hag’s side after the dismissal of Marcus Rashford, who was sent off for planting his foot on the ankle of Elias Jelert.

The visitors looked comfortable inside the first half as Rasmus Hojlund put them two goals to the good with close-range finishes.

Referee Donatas Rumsas then made a game-changing call in the 42nd minute as he was alerted of Rashford’s reckless tackle as the Englishman tried to shield the ball.

The red card incentivised Copenhagen, as they managed to equalize before halftime through goals from Mohamed Elyounoussi and Diogo Goncalves' penalty.

Bruno Fernandes restored his side’s lead via a penalty as United defied the red card, as VAR once again gave the spot kick from a handball from Lukas Lerager.

As reported by BBC, Lerager made amends for his mistake with a goal from the back post, and 17-year-old substitute Roony Bardghji hammered home what proved to be the winner in the 87th minute.

Ten Hag’s remarks as fans back him

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag, like his counterpart Mikel Arteta a few days ago, was fuming at the referee.

The gaffer was adamant that Copenhagen’s first goals shouldn’t have counted as an offside player interfered with Andre Onana’s line of sight.

He was also critical of the circumstances that led to the penalty that levelled matters at Parken.

“It’s clear: we are very disappointed, we started the game so well – the best 10 minutes of the season – we are winning the game and the red card changes everything. We [then] concede two goals before half-time which should never count,” Ten Hag said as cited on The Guardian.
“The first is offside, the second a penalty – but it’s so close and the hand is in such a normal position. The red card is harsh, he [Rashford] went for the ball and the referee needed such a long time [to decide]. When you freeze [the act] it always looks worse.”
“I’m very disappointed about such decisions. The game is never meant to be like this.”

On social media, fans surprisingly did not turn on Ten Hag and seemed to back the manager’s sentiments:

"Only a blind man with an agenda couldn’t see this"

@aman2_utd added:

"Nobody can't see that we are fighting on our own against the system."

@fidelityic said:

"United's recent game showed that United are fighting against the system because I still cannot understand why VAR decisions are always different when they relate to United."

@Oliveresuana observed:

"The way commentators start inventing and mismatching words to justify VAR calls against Man United is interesting."

United’s next game is a Premier League encounter against relegation-threatened Luton Town on Saturday, November 11.

Ancelotti surpasses Sir Alex Ferguson.

Sports Brief also reported on Carlo Ancelotti’s recent achievement as they surpassed Sir Alex Ferguson in the Champions League.

Los Blancos secured their fourth successive win in the Champions League this season with a 3-0 win over Braga.

This triumph also guaranteed their qualification for the knockout stages of the competition.
