FootballArsenal Accused of 'Undermining the System' After Writing Statement to PGMOL
- Arsenal has released a statement concerning the VAR controversies on November 5
- The Gunners were unimpressed by the officiating as they lost to Newcastle United
- Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher have blasted Arsenal for undermining the system
Arsenal have been slammed for releasing a statement directed at PGMOL over refereeing decisions during their Premier League match against Newcastle United.
Through a scathing statement, the Gunners called for the raising of refereeing standards as they backed Mikel Arteta’s comments after their 1-0 defeat to the Magpies.
Anthony Gordon bundled home a goal early in the second half and the VAR checked the strike on three counts: whether the ball had gone out of play in the build-up, whether there was a foul, and whether there was an offside against a Newcastle player.
The goal eventually stood, much to the discontent of the Arsenal manager. Arteta had initially said that players, coaches, and supporters 'deserve better' in his post-match comments.
The club clearly agrees with his sentiments:
"Arsenal wholeheartedly supports Mikel Arteta's post-match comments after yet more unacceptable refereeing and VAR errors on Saturday evening,” the club statement read, as cited by the BBC.
"The Premier League is the best league in the world with the best players, coaches and supporters, all of whom deserve better.”
Gary Neville’s response to Arsenal
On social media, Manchester United legend-turned-pundit, Gary Neville was not impressed by the Gunners’ latest statement.
Along with fellow pundit, Jamie Carragher, he shared his thoughts and accused the club of 'undermining the system'.
Neville cited his own experience as a player when major decisions went against his team. He wrote on social media:
"You feel like it’s us against the world I get it. Everyone hates us, the refs are out to stitch us up and theirs bias v us. However I can never remember the club writing letters undermining the system and the whole refereeing community."

FootballInterestingly, this is not the first time Arsenal have been embroiled in a controversial VAR call.
In February 2023, Arteta’s side failed to win against Brentford and he accused referee of the day, Lee Mason of 'not understanding the job'. The Gunners did not issue a statement on that occasion.
Nunez produces miss of the season
Sports Brief also reported on how Liverpool star, Darwin Nunez produced a horrofic missed chance during the game against Luton Town over the weekned.
With the score deadlocked, Trent Alexander-Arnold sent a cross to Mohamed Salah in the 69th minute and the Egyptian found Nunez on the opposite post.
He only had to get his shot on target to score, but the 23-year-old somehow blasted his effort over the bar, leaving the entire stadium gasping in sheer disbelief.
