  • Luis Diaz came off the bench to score a header and rescue a point for the Reds
  • The embattled winger dedicated the goal to his kidnapped father, who is yet to be released

Luis Diaz played with a heavy heart but was the hero Liverpool needed to secure a point against newly promoted Luton Town, a goal he dedicated to his kidnapped father.

On paper, the trip to Kenilworth Road looked like it would be an easy game for Liverpool, but they found out differently that their hosts are no pushovers.

Per The Athletic, the game was deadlocked till the 80th minute before former Manchester United academy star Tahith Chong scored on the end of a Luton counterattack after Virgil van Dijk's header from a corner was saved.

The hosts were unable to hold on, and it was Diaz, who was returning to the squad for the first time since his parents were kidnapped in Colombia, who scored via Harvey Elliott's cross.

Diaz dedicates goal to kidnapped father

The Colombian winger missed last weekend's 3-0 over Nottingham Forest and the Carabao Cup 2-1 win over Bournemouth after he was excused from the squad due to the incidents around his parents.

He returned to the squad but only made the bench, and with Liverpool 1-0 down and on the brink of a defeat, he replaced Ryan Gravenberch and scored.

Per TNT Sports, he lifted his shirt and displayed a message for his father, Luis Manuel Diaz, who is yet to be released. The message reads "Libertad para papa", which translates to "Freedom for my father".

His teammates surrounded him before he went to the touchline to hug manager Jurgen Klopp. About his goal, Klopp said:

"A wonderful moment, but it doesn't change the situation. The most important thing is that his father gets released. It's wonderful he wanted to be here. For us, it's a super important goal and for him, very important and emotional."

Jota dedicates goal to Diaz

Sports Brief previously reported on Diogo Jota dedicating his goal to Diaz after opening the scoring for Liverpool in their 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest last weekend.

The Portuguese ran to the touchline and held up the winger's number 7 jersey as a sign of solidarity following the bad news from his home country about the abduction of his parents.
