South African powerhouse Mamelodi Sundowns have booked their spot in the final of the African Football League inaugural edition.

Having reached the final of the competition, Piano The Brazilians Di'tsotsi are guaranteed nothing less than USD 3 million, billed for the runner-up of the competition.

Sundowns proved too strong to survive pressure in the semi-final, defeating Al Ahly 1-0 on aggregates, having won the first leg at home courtesy of a lone strike from Thapelo Maseko. The second leg ended 0-0.

They now set up a clash with Wydad AC for a chance to win the AFL prize money. The first leg is slated for Sunday, November 5, while the reverse fixture will be at home on November 12.

All the AFL prize money, as confirmed by CAF:

Winner: USD 4 Million.

Runner-up: USD 3 million

Semi-finalists: USD 1.7 million each

Quarter-finalists: USD 1 million each

Mokwena wary of Wydad AC fans

Meanwhile, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rhulani Mokwena has admitted that Wydad Casablanca fans can be a major influence in the first leg.

The South Africans arrived in Morocco from Cairo ahead of the massive fixture slated for the famous Stade Mohamed V as they seek to hand themselves an advantage ahead of the return leg in Tshwane next week.

Mokwena understands how hostile the fans in Morocco can be. He said via GOAL:

“Last season, when we came here and played in the semi-finals of the Caf Champions League, one of the most important things we had to deal with, apart from the pitch and the tactical approach, was the influence of the crowd, you would call them the 12th man.”

Sundowns ranked best team in Africa

Sports Brief earlier reported that in the latest Opta Power Rankings, South African side Sundowns are number one. They have won the league title on 13 occasions since its inception in 1996.

They are regulars in the latter stages of the CAF Champions League, reaching the quarter-finals at least in each of the past five seasons.

They were the champions in 2016.
