  • Erik ten Hag's position at Manchester United is threatened due to poor results
  • A couple of managers, both employed and free agents, have been linked to the job
  • One of those is Sporting CP boss, Ruben Amorim, who has now spoken about the reports

Manchester United have been hit with rejection even before their search to replace Erik ten Hag begins after a name linked to the job denied any contact with the club.

Ten Hag's job is unsafe at the helm at Old Trafford after a poor start to the season and became further threatened after the 3-0 Carabao Cup loss and elimination at the hands of Newcastle United.

The Red Devils are going through their worst start to a league season in many years. Per Opta, they have lost more than eight of their first 15 games for the first time since 1962, while they have also lost more than 50% of their first 10 home games for the first time since 1930.

Football managers' names are beginning to be rumoured to replace the embattled Dutch boss despite the club distancing itself from reports that a managerial search has already started.

One of the names linked is Sporting CP boss, Ruben Amorim, and the rumours have sparked a response from the Portuguese, as quoted by Mirror UK.

"This year I’m not going to go back to the same conversation as last year. I’m not going to make any kind of comment on these situations. We don’t know the future, it depends on the results," he said.
"Regarding the future, I have an idea for the end of the season but I won’t say it now. But the results and the context take us to something different. I don’t want to be commenting on these things. I have not been contacted by Manchester United."

The 38-year-old is highly revered in Portugal and is popularly called the young Jose Mourinho. He has previously been linked to Premier League jobs with Chelsea, but he opted to stay with his current team.

5 managers who could replace ten Hag

Sports Brief also reported on five managers who could replace ten Hag if the Dutch tactician is sacked as Man Utd manager as pressure mounts on him over poor results.

Former Chelsea boss, Graham Potter is reportedly top of the list, especially if Sir Jim Ratcliffe succeeds in buying a 25% stake at the club, with Hansi Flick also a candidate.
