After Lionel Messi won his record-extending 8th Ballon d'Or, there were interesting discussions about who would be the next player to win the award.
Manchester City's Erling Haaland and PSG's Kylian Mbappe were the first names that came up since they finished second and third, respectively, behind Messi.
PSG boss Luis Enrique recently discussed Mbappe's chances of winning the prestigious award.
Mbappe is considered the best player in the world, ahead of Haaland. The France captain has been scoring goals for fun for both club and country, and many see him as the next superstar after the Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominance.
Luis Enrique recently explained what the winger needs to do to win the award.
"To win the Ballon d’Or, in addition to individual performances which are very good for Kylian, you have to win club and national trophies," he told reporters. "We try to win as much as possible in Paris and Kylian can also do it in the national team. I am sure he will win many Ballons d’Or," via GOAL.
Mbappe has already won a World Cup and multiple league titles. The only major trophy missing from his resume is the Champions League.
In addition, Mbappe has won five Golden Boots in Ligue 1, so he has the reputation.
Future Ballon d'Or conteders
Haaland is another name that has been a potential winner of the award.
The Manchester City striker bagged 52 goals in 53 games last season, per Transfermarkt. He won the treble with the club, and some felt he deserved this year's award over Messi.

PSG celebrate Messi and Mbappe
Earlier, Sports Brief reported on PSG congratulating Lionel Messi, Mbappe, and Randal Kolo Muani for their achievements in the 2023 Ballon d'Or.
The Argentine won his eighth award, beating Man City's Haaland and his former PSG teammate Mbappe, who finished second and third, respectively.
Messi received the 2023 award, perhaps his last, after helping Argentina win the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, his win was seen as quite controversial.
