Manchester United exited the Carabao Cup in damaging fashion as they fell to Newcastle United at Old Trafford on November 1.

Eddie Howe's side scored thrice to exact revenge on the side that beat them in last season's final. Miguel Almiron and Joe Willock got the goals on either side of Lewis Hall's first career senior goal.

The defeat was the latest in the spate of sorry performances for the Red Devils. Combined with a similar 3-0 loss to Manchester City on Sunday, Sky Sports reports that it is now their worst-ever home start to a season since 1930.

After the Newcastle defeat, the players hurriedly left the pitch, applauding fans on their way out. However, Mason Mount stood out after he went around the pitch, clapping the fans in what has been jeered by fans online

Mason Mount's time at Manchester United

The midfielder only joined the Red Devils this summer after making a shock exit from Chelsea. He is yet to hit the ground running, with only one assist to his name so far.

The decision to take more time clapping fans was met with sneering comments that drew comparisons to his antics when he was at Chelsea.

"He was doing this at Chelsea after every game,"

@inrunningguru said,

"So what? He’s got no shame or knows a few gullible people will like him for it…most people head straight down the tunnel after losing 3-0 at home because they should."

"More claps than goals."

United's next fixture comes in the form of an away visit to Fulham on Saturday before facing Copenhagen in the Champions League.

What ten Hag needs to do at Manchester United

Sports Brief had earlier reported that Manchester United fans headed into the new season full of hope and optimism after seeing what Erik ten Hag was capable of in his debut campaign in England.

But three months in, United have struggled to produce consistent results and even in the games they have won, they laboured to do so. A good case in point was the 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest in August of the 1-0 win over Copenhagen last month.

Ten Hag needs to exhibit some level of ruthlessness if he is to save Manchester United's stuttering season.
