  • Newcastle United beat Manchester United 3-0 in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford
  • The Magpies aimed a dig at United fans who left the stadium before full-time
  • Mason Mount was the only one who applauded the fans after the final whistle

Newcastle United rubbed salt on Manchester United's injury with a succinct social media post after beating the Red Devils 3-0 in front of their fans at Old Trafford.

The Magpies avenged their 2-0 loss to United in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium last season with a resounding win over Erik ten Hag's men in the same competition.

It continued a run of poor form for United, who suffered back-to-back 3-0 home losses after losing to Manchester City in the derby by the same scoreline on Sunday.

The result puts ten Hag's job in jeopardy and possibly suggests he has lost the dressing room after recent reports of clashes by players on the pitch and complaints over tactics.

Newcastle troll Man Utd fans

According to a social media post by the Toon, the attendance at Old Trafford for last night's game was 72,000, but by the time of the announcement, it was less because of fans who had left.

After the visitors made it three 15 minutes into the second half, some fans started making their way out of the stadium, not only for the scoreline but because of the performance, which gave no hope of a turnaround.

Mount applauds the fans

Despite the early departure of most United fans, some waited till the end of the match but were ignored by the players, most of whom headed straight down the tunnel.

As seen in a video recirculated by Utd Faithfuls, summer recruit Mason Mount was the only one who went around the Old Trafford stands applauding the fans.

The gesture was appreciated by Reds fans on social media, while it was looked down on by fans of his former club, Chelsea.

Klopp's reaction to United's defeat

Sports Brief reported on Jurgen Klopp's reaction to United's loss to Newcastle after he was informed of the result during his post-match conference.

The German boss was amazed and reacted in disbelief to his Northwest neighbours getting thrashed at home by the same team they defeated in last season's final.
