Bayern Munich exited the DFB-Pokal in the second round for the third time in four years following a 2-1 loss on the road at third-division Saarbruecken on Wednesday, November 1.
Marcel Gaus was the hero for the third-tier side after popping up to score in the 96th minute to ensure Thomas Tuchel’s side were dumped out of the German cup.
According to GOAL, Bayern took an early lead in the second-round tie through Thomas Muller, but the home team pulled level right before half-time through Patrick Sontheimer.
With scores locked at 1-1 and the match seemingly destined for extra time, defender Gaus scored in the sixth minute of injury time to earn his side a famous victory against the reigning Bundesliga champions.
Bayern Munich will hope to bounce back and put their early exit from the DFB-Pokal behind them when they travel to rivals Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga on Saturday, November 4.
Matthijs de Ligt suffers MCL injury
Meanwhile, Bayern Munich suffered a double blow in their German Cup exit as Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt is expected to be sidelined for several weeks after suffering an MCL injury, SB Nation reports.
De Ligt went flying in for a challenge in the first half, crumpling to the turf on the waterlogged pitch and clutching his knee as the club believes the injury to the defender is more serious than expected.
More tests will be conducted to determine the extent of the injury to the Dutch defender, although it is expected he will miss the trip to Borussia Dortmund this weekend and several other games for the Bavarians.
