The Argentine beat Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe to the top award after leading his country to World Cup victory last year in Qatar.

Lionel Messi's Ballon d'Ors

His long-time sponsor, Adidas, have now responded by gifting him eight rings to symbolise each of his wins. Messi first won the Ballon d'Or in 2009 and did so consecutively for the next three years.

He ceded ground to his rival Cristiano Ronaldo for two years before returning in 2015. The former Barcelona captain failed to win for three years but bagged a sixth one in 2019, and a seventh one in 2021 before extending it to eight this year.

AS reports that the rings will later be sold at an auction and the proceeds donated to a charity decided by Messi and Adidas.

The apparel giants have also debuted a new shoe line dubbed the 'X Crazyfast.1 Messi El Ocho'. It has a golden lining, just the same as the golden ball. A goat's head has been placed just above the laces with the words 'El Mejor Del Mundo', which means 'Best in the World', printed on them.

The shoe also has eight golden balls on top. The 36-year-old could debut the new boots when Argentina play the World Cup qualifiers against Uruguay this month.
