FootballOriol Romeu: Barcelona Midfielder Dealing With Knee Issue Which Has Contributed to Poor Performances
- Oriol Romeu has been criticised by some Barcelona fans for his recent performances
- Romeu was signed from Girona in the summer as a replacement for Sergio Busquets
- The former Southampton player is currently dealing with some discomfort in his knee
Oriol Romeu has been facing a lot of criticism for his performances of late.
The 31-year-old midfielder was signed from Girona in the summer and has made 16 appearances for the Spanish side so far.
Despite a bright start to his term at the club, Romeu has now attracted criticism from fans who believe that he isn’t performing to the levels expected of a Blaugrana star.
His showing in El Clasico, in particular, has been noted, as some felt that he didn’t do enough to keep Jude Bellingham quiet.
The Madrid star scored a brace as Los Blancos claimed bragging rights. As noted by Football Espana, one of the reasons for his performances of late is a knee issue.
The publication noted that Romeu is nursing an injury and is playing through the pain. The former Southampton midfielder is said to have some discomfort in his knee, which has been flaring up.
Barcelona have been hit with numerous injury problems of late and have had to rely on some of their youth players to fill in during crunch games.
With key players still on the sidelines, Romeu has continued to step up despite the injury struggles.
His struggles have drawn the ire of some fans, who don’t rate him very highly.
“He’s 31 years old. We signed him from Girona, and he has played most of his career at Southampton. What did people honestly expect? He’s done fine on the whole so far this season, but as I said when we signed him, there’ll be games where his frailties will be glaring.”
“That's what happens when you replace Busi with a 4 million euro 31-year-old Girona DM.”
