Olympique Lyon's Ligue 1 clash against Olympique Marseille was postponed after Lyon's team bus was pelted with rocks on its way to Stade Velodrome on Sunday evening.

Lyon owner John Textor said that his team was ready to play the game despite the scary attack on their team bus on their way to the stadium.

Projectiles hit their team bus, and Fabio Grosso, along with some members of their staff, were injured. Grosso was pictured on a stretcher after the incident, per BBC.

Referee François Letexier later confirmed that the match was called off.

Violence in French football is a familiar occurance. In 2021, a Lyon vs Marseille clash was abandoned due to fan violence. In the last few years, several incidents of fan violence in football have been reported, per ESPN.

Lyon owner angry with postponement

Lyon owner John Textor said that his team wanted to play the match, and the decision to postpone was taken by match officials.

"No [ we didn’t ask to cancel the match]. Very quickly after it happened, we had a team meeting […] our team decided they would play. They wanted to play, they were ready to play. I’m very proud of the captain wanting to do that. The decision was made independently of us […] We wanted to play football. We’re angry," via GOAL.

The seven-time Ligue 1 champions are winless after nine games and sit bottom of the table, while Marseille are 9th with 12 points.

Lyon will now have to wait longer to get their first win of the season next weekend following a poor start that saw them get scolded by the teams ultras who unambiguously told them off regarding their unprecedented display's so far.

Fabio Grosso appointed Lyon boss

Sports Brief earlier reported on Fabio Grosso's appointment as Lyon boss following the sacking of Laurent Blanc.

The 45-year-old takes over the fallen French giants on a deal which runs until June 30, 2024 with an option for an additional season.

He started coaching with Juventus's youth system in 2014 before continuing his modest managerial career mostly in the Italian Serie B.
