  • Manchester United succumbed to a 3-0 defeat to neighbours Manchester City on Sunday
  • The home side were not up to the task as Pep Guardiola’s side proved too strong for them
  • Erik ten Hag said later after the match that it was one of his worst days

Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag was at pains to point out what went wrong in the derby after his side succumbed to a lowly defeat to Manchester City.

A brace from Erling Haaland and Phil Foden’s strike were enough to condemn the Red Devils to a fifth league defeat as their so-called noisy neighbours moved level on points with second-placed Arsenal.

Haaland opened the scoring from the penalty spot after Rasmus Hojlund was penalized for dragging down Rodri, before adding a second from a Bernadro Silva cross in the second half.

The Norwegian then turned provider as he set up Phil Foden, who got City’s third goal in the 80th minute.

In truth, the gulf in quality between the two teams on Sunday was there for all to see, as City managed an impressive 21 shots, despite being the away side, as cited on the BBC.

Defeat brought forth a brutal reality check for Erik ten Hag, whose side always seem to be on a trajectory entailing one step forward and two steps back.

United have now only won three of their last seven league matches, and lie eleven points behind early pace-setters Tottenham Hotspur.

What Ten Hag said

Speaking after the game, Ten Hag said that the defeat was one of his worst as United manager.

"Of course, it is disappointing," he said, as cited on ESPN. "But last year we had many highlights and now when you lose a derby in the way we lose, that is disappointing."
"First half we had a very good gameplan and the execution was also very good. It was toe to toe first and it was very similar, but then the penalty changed the moment. Then, in the second half we chose to become more offensive and it is 2-0 too quickly. From that point on it was a difficult game."

United will have to put the defeat behind them quickly as they face a tricky fixture against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, November 1.

Onana denies Haaland with brilliant save

Sports Brief also reported on one brilliant save from Andre Onana to deny Erling Haaland in the Manchester derby.

The first half ended 1-0 thanks to Haaland's penalty, but it could have been more after the Norwegian striker was left unmarked at the far post and directed a bullet header towards the goal.

As seen in a viral video on social media, Onana rushed from the other side of the post and made a brilliant close-range save, pushing the ball away to safety.
