  • Ajax have slumped to the bottom of the Dutch Eredivisie table
  • The 2022 Dutch champions were thrashed 5-2 by PSV Eindhoven in De Topper on Sunday, October 29
  • Volendam's win over Excelsior in the same day meant Ajax are rock bottom in the standings

Dutch giants Ajax’s horror form continued as they slipped to the bottom of the Eredivisie table on Sunday, October 29.

It was a new low for Ajax, who were crowned champions of the Netherlands as recently as 2022.

Their latest game saw them thrashed 5-2 by familiar rivals PSV Eindhoven -a result which confirmed their worst run of form in the club’s history.

There was a glimmer of hope for Ajax in the opening exchanges as Branco van den Boomen gave his side the lead, but PSV, who are more settled and organized this season, levelled matters just 10 minutes later through veteran Mexican winger Hirving Lozano.

As cited on Sportsmole, Ajax then took the lead once again through Brian Bobbey, but PSV pegged them back once more as Luuk de Jong and Ismael Saibari turned the game on its head to make the scores 3-2.

There was a general sense of dejavu among Ajax players once PSV took the lead, as they appeared depleted, defeated, and to some extent, out of sorts.

Lozano scored two more goals to secure a hat trick, as Ajax succumbed to a fifth straight defeat of the season.

Ajax’s woes persist

Having won just once so far this season, Ajax find themselves bottom of the pile, although they have two games in hand over Utrecht, who sit second from bottom.

Defeat to PSV only served as a painful wake up call to Ajax club chiefs; that the problem perhaps lies deeper than just the manager.

As reported on GOAL.com, Ajax parted ways with Maurice Steijn on October 23 after a wave of furious fan protests over recent results

Steijn was only appointed in the summer after Erik ten Hag’s successor Alfred Schreuder was sacked in January 2023. Neither of the two managers has managed to pick up from where Ten Hag left off, with Steijn lasting just 11 days.

Onana’s incredible save as Man United thrashed in derby

Elsewhere, Sports Brief reported on Andre Onana’s incredible save to quell Erling Haaland n the Manchester derby on Sunday.

Erik ten Hag’s side succumbed to a 3-0 defeat, but there was a silver lining in the defeat as Onana appears to be back to his best.

United could have headed into the halftime two goals down but have Andre Onana to thank after the Cameroonian goalkeeper pulled off a brilliant point blank save to deny Haaland.
