Barcelona suffered their first defeat of the season in the hands of Real Madrid in the first El Clasico of the 2023/24 season on Saturday evening. Jude Bellingham scored twice to hand Madrid a hard-fought 2-1 win.
Barcelona striker Robert Lewandowski was not happy with the result, saying his team deserved more from the game while taking a swipe at Madrid.
Bellingham continued with his impressive form, scoring a stunner and an injury-time winner to help Madrid solidify their lead at the top of La Liga. Barcelona scored first, though, through Ilkay Gundogan after six minutes.
The match appeared to be heading Barcelona's way, but Bellingham scored a spectacular goal from distance in the 68th minute to even matters.
In the dying embers of the game, the England international came up clutch again. The 20-year-old turned in Luka Modric's flick following Dani Carvajal's cross from the right, per BBC. The 20-year-old has scored 13 goals in 13 appearances for the club.
It was a vital win for Madrid, who remain top of La Liga with 28 points, four more than Barcelona.
Lewandowski blasts Real Madrid
Lewandowski was making his return from an ankle injury he sustained earlier this month in the Champions League.
After the game, the Polish striker said their arch-rivals did not deserve to win El Clasico.
“An undeserved win for Real Madrid,” Lewandowski said. “Of course, they got the three points, but the league is long and we will not give up,” via Barca Universal.
Either way, Real Madrid took the bragging rights and the three points, and Barcelona will have to bounce back quickly. However, they will have to wait until April 2024 to avenge their painful Clasico defeat.
