FootballAndre Onana Publicly Backs Garnacho Amid FA Probe Into Youngster’s Social Media Post
- Alejandro Garnacho is facing an FA probe into a social media post he made on Tuesday
- The Argentine was among the United players who hailed Andre Onana for a late penalty save against Copenhagen
- His post, however, could easily have been taken out of context, and Onana has responded on social media
Manchester United goalkeeper, Andre Onana has publicly backed his teammate Alejandro Garnacho amid reports that the FA is investigating the forward over a social media post.
In a since-deleted post, Garnacho celebrated Onana’s heroics on Tuesday during the Champions League clash against Copenhagen by sharing a photo of the pair alongside two gorilla emojis.
While the post was seemingly innocent, Garnacho deleted it moments later after possibly learning of the racial connotations of the emojis he used.
However, it could be too little too late for the young forward, as his post falls on the wrong side of FA guidelines, according to The Mirror.
Onana’s response
Since the news broke of Garnacho’s potential investigation, Onana has since taken to social media with a classy defence of his teammate.
On his Instagram stories on Thursday, October 26, Onana shared a photo of himself and Garnacho along with the caption:
"People cannot choose what I should be offended by. I know exactly what @garnacho7 meant: power and strength. This matter should go no further."
Was Garnacho at fault?
In 2020, there was a similar incident which coincidentally also involved a Manchester United player.
Edinson Cavani was investigated by the FA after commenting 'Gracias Negrito' on a post by a friend who congratulated him for scoring a goal, as reported on The Guardian.
In Uruguay, the phrase is meant to acknowledge a friend affectionately, but Cavani was still fined £100,000 and slapped with a three-game ban.
This was because the post went against the guidelines the FA has on racially sensitive social media posts.

FootballWith this in mind, Garnacho will likely suffer the same fate as the FA could deem his post as an aggravated breach of the guidelines.
Darwin Nunez produces miss of the season
Sports Brief also reported on a hilarious incident during Liverpool’s game against Toulouse on Thursday, October 26.
Darwin Nunez rolled back his first-season struggles in England after he produced a miss-of-the-season contender on October 26.
Luckily for him, Ryan Gravenberch pounced on the rebound to extend Liverpool's lead to 4-1. Ironically, Nunez had earlier scored from a tighter angle to make it 3-1.
