  • David de Gea left Manchester United in the summer after his contract expired
  • The Spaniard has been without a club since then, but rumours have linked him to a return
  • He shared a cryptic post on X amid reports he could return if Andre Onana goes to the AFCON

David de Gea appears to be teasing fans on social media after recent rumours linked him with a return to Manchester United on a short-term contract.

De Gea left the club at the end of last season after his contract expired and was not renewed. He spent 12 years at Old Trafford as United's first-choice goalkeeper.

He endured a difficult final season with criticism surrounding his lack of ball-playing attributes, which was claimed by fans to be hindering Erik ten Hag's style of play.

Per BBC Sport, the Red Devils spent £47.2 million to sign Andre Onana from Inter Milan as his replacement after the goalkeeper helped the Italians to the Champions League final.

De Gea's cryptic social media post

At the time Onana signed for Manchester United, he was a retired international for Cameroon after clashing with head coach Rigobert Song and was sent home from the 2022 World Cup.

But the shot-stopper is now back with the Indomitable Lions and is in contention to represent the country at the African Cup of Nations in Cote d'Ivoire in January 2024.

Per Mirror UK, United are considering the return of de Gea on a short-term basis to provide cover when Onana heads for the AFCON and misses a month of Premier League football.

The Spaniard was undoubtedly reading the reports about him and took to his official X page to drop a teaser. He posted the thinking emoji, which has left fans wondering what is happening behind the scenes.

How de Gea compares to Onana

Sports Brief previously compared de Gea's stats to Onana's after the former Ajax goalkeeper's slow start between the sticks for the Red Devils, which earned him criticism from fans.

The 27-year-old bettered his predecessor in ball-playing abilities but performed below par in actual goalkeeping stats. It evidently confirms the Spanish star being the better shot-stopper but poorer with his feet.
