Presidential candidate of the All People's Congress Party, Hassan Ayariga, has promised to abolish sports betting in Ghana if he is elected as head of state.
The leader of the APC party believes that betting is for lazy people, and it is robbing the country of hardworking young men and women.
The issue of sports betting has been rife in the West African country, with the government of Ghana implementing a 10% withholding tax on bet winnings.
“I will cancel betting [if I become president] because betting is an avenue for lazy people. Why do you bet? Because they have no jobs,” he said on 3FM, as quoted by pulse.com.gh.
“I will cancel betting, [and make it] illegal in my country. What do you mean by betting when I need young people like them to sit behind computers and design things and build a country where we have the highest technology in Ghana and the world?”
Mr Ayariga's comments come months after the majority leader in Parliament, Honourable Osei Kyei Mensah-Bonsu, described Ghanaian youth as lazy for spending time on betting. as reported by Ghana Web.
Meanwhile, Mr Ayariga will be contesting for the 2024 election.
Ghanaian MP on Hughton's appointment
Earlier, Sports Brief reported that Ghanaian lawmaker, Sam George claimed that the Ghana Football Association appointed Chris Hughton as the Black Stars coach.
According to the Member of Parliament for Ningo-Pampram, the FA wants a coach they can manipulate, hence the reason for appointing the former Brighton & Hove Albion manager.

Mensah-Bonsu wants Hughton as coach
Sports Brief also reported that Osei Mensah Kyei Bonsu, the majority leader in Ghana's Parliament, believed that Hughton was the right man for the Black Stars job.
The experienced gaffer was in Ghana for almost a week and reports suggested that he would be meeting the Ghana Football Association over the vacant coaching role.
In an interview with Angel FM, astute legislator, Osei Mensah backed the idea of Hughton becoming manager.
