Pitting legends against each other is an entertaining pastime.

Pitso Mosimane's reign at Mamelodi Sundowns will forever be etched in lore, while Rulani Mokwena is in the early days of building his own legacy.

The 36-year-old football philosopher has just completed his first 365 days in charge and the statistical comparisons were inevitable.

Mosimane had a lengthy playing career, retiring from the game in 1996. Five years later he would begin his managerial run.

After Mosimane left Bafana Bafana in June 2012, he took six months off before joining Sundowns in December of that year.

By contrast, Mokwena hit the dugout early, working his way onto the Sundowns bench as early as age 27.

After Mokwena's first 50 games in charge as the sole head coach, coinciding with his first 365 days in charge, he is slightly ahead of the now-Al Wahda boss.

Earning legendary status is a marathon, not a sprint, defined by how one finishes the race they have embarked on.

Mosimane left Sundowns with five PSL tiles, four domestic cup titles, and one CAF Champions League.

Mokwena has the one PSL title, but admittedly inherited a team that had not failed to win the league since 2017 while Mosimane was still at the helm.

Mokwena does have two extra PSL winner credits as co-coach, as he was paired with current assistant Manqoba Mngqithi before the club promoted the younger man to the top job.

Football dreamers will hope that one day Mosimane returns so they may see the two on opposite domestic benches.

Sundowns still setting records

Sports Brief recently reported on Sundowns breaking Kaizer Chiefs' record of 31 games unbeaten.

Sundowns last tasted defeat in the league in September 2022 when they were beaten by SuperSport United.

That victory against Stellenbosch meant they had also won their first eight games of the new season.
