FootballChampions League: Football Fans Make Same Joke About Sevilla After Defeat to Arsenal
- Arsenal beat Sevilla on Tuesday in a huge step towards qualifying for Champions League knockouts
- Defeat left Sevilla in third place in Group B with two points from three games
- Sevilla will slip into the Europa League if they end the group stage in third place
Football fans have come out with the same joke after Sevilla’s defeat to Arsenal in their third group game of the Champions League.
Los Nervionenses qualified for Europe’s elite competition by winning the 2022/23 Europa League final, beating Jose Mourinho’s Roma.
However, it is quite a familiar script for the Spanish side in the Champions League once again as they appear to be struggling despite the potential they possess.
On Tuesday, their Champions League ambitions were dealt a further blow after they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to Arsenal at home.
Arsenal ace, Gabriel Martinelli gave the visitors the lead after rounding the Sevilla goalkeeper before slotting home in first-half stoppage time.
According to Arsenal.com, Gabriel Jesus then made it 2-0 in the second half with a decent strike. The game looked like it had slipped away from Sevilla, but Nemanja Gudelj headed in from a set piece to half the deficit, as cited on the BBC.
Despite being backed by a buoyant home crowd, Sevilla succumbed to defeat as the seven-time Europa League champions continue to look for that elusive first win in the competition.
Having drawn their first two group games against RC Lens and PSV Eindhoven, Sevilla’s defeat to Arsenal leaves their Champions League hopes in tatters as they sit third in Group B, three points off Lens in second place.
On social media, fans who noted Sevilla’s position on the standings were quick to point out a familiar pattern, as the club has had a tendency to slip into the second-tier Europa League before going all-out in that competition.
