Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies are chasing silverware on two fronts.

Banyana Ba Style have beaten the title-chasing University of the Western Cape and now sit on top of the log with a superior goal difference.

The league concludes at the end of November, but in the middle of their title run, they must travel to Abidjan to contest the CAF Women's Champions League.

Sundowns Ladies triumphed 1-0 away from home thanks to a 19th-minute goal from Refilwe Tholekele.

Former UWC player, Kholosa Biyana was a star performer in the victory. Sundowns FC quoted her as saying:

"It was a great test for us and we passed it impressively. This win today will give us confidence ahead of the CAF Women’s Champions League. We need to keep ourselves refreshed and I am glad that as a team, we fought as a unit."

Sundowns Ladies qualified for this edition of the CAF Women's Champions League based on their lifting of last season's Hollywoodbets Super League.

The current league season began on the first weekend of February this year, raising questions about how a 30-game season has taken over 10 months to finish.

The women's tournament will feature two groups of four teams each, with the top two going through to the semi-finals.

Sundowns Ladies play JKT Queen from Tanzania on November 5, and Sporting Casablanca from Morocco on November 8 before concluding their group against hosts Athletico Abidjan on November 11.

The semi-finals are scheduled for November 15 with the final on November 18.

Farewell to Women's legend

Sports Brief recently reported on Janine Van Wyk announcing her retirement and her final selection for Banyana Banyana.

Van Wyk pulled women's football into the South African consciousness and will bid farewell against DR Congo this week.

She earned 183 international caps and laid the foundations for the growth of the women's game by founding her own club, JVW FC.
