  • Inter Miami lost their last game of the regular MLS season 1-0 against Charlotte FC
  • Miami missed out on playoffs before their doubleheader against the team they played thrice this season
  • Lionel Messi has sent a heartfelt message to the team after a bittersweet end to their season

Lionel Messi has picked on the positives of a bittersweet end to the Major League Soccer season for Inter Miami after playing their last game against Charlotte FC.

Messi joined the team in July and immediately transformed their performance on the pitch, helping to win the inaugural Leagues Cup and reaching the final of the Open Cup.

His injury during the international break in September derailed their season, and during that time, they lost their second final and missed out on the playoff.

Per ESPN, his first 90 minutes since September was not enough to help the team avoid defeat in their final game of the season, a meaningless match which helped their opponents qualify for the playoffs.

Messi's message to Miami teammates

The captain took to his Instagram page to admonish the team despite their recent setback, describing the season as a success, having won their first-ever trophy.

"I am proud of everything the team accomplished this season. With everyone's work and effort, we were able to win the @leaguescup, achieving the first title in the history of the @intermiamicf, we reached the final of the Lamar Hunt U.S. @opencup and we were even fighting to get into the @mls Playoffs practically until the last moment, the message reads.
"We are left with all the good things and above all with the desire to improve to be even more competitive next year. I would like to thank all the people at the club and the city of Miami for the support they always give us. I am sure that we will continue to live incredible moments together as has happened in recent months. A hug for everyone!"

The 36-year-old played 14 games, scored 11 goals and provided five assists. Next for him is the Ballon d'Or ceremony in Paris on October 30, where he is expected to pick up his record-extending eighth award.

Yedlin's verdict on Messi's season

Sports Brief also reported that Inter Miami teammate DeAndre Yedlin rated Messi's first season at the club after their playoff hopes were dashed against Cincinnati.

The American defender acknowledged winning a trophy for the first time in the club's history but admitted it could have ended better and won't see it as a success.
