Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has opened up on the emotional story behind his choice of the number 39 jersey despite having other numbers available.
Guimaraes is a versatile player who can play across many midfield positions but plays primarily as a defensive midfielder, number 4 as it was called or number 6 in modern football.
He shot into the limelight when he joined Olympique Lyon from Athletico Paranaense, announcing himself to the world, which earned him a deserved move to the Premier League.
Per Sky Sports, the Magpies paid £40m to sign as top European clubs, including Arsenal, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain, were watching him.
Why Guimaraes wears number 39
The Brazilian wore the number 39 during his time in his homeland and retained the shirt number when he moved to Europe. He has now revealed the reason behind it to BBC Sports.
"When I signed with Athletico Paranaense (in 2018), I was having a chat with my father. I asked him, 'Father, which number do you think I could take?'" He said.
"He said to me, 'Bruno, if you have an opportunity, take the number 39. It's the [dispatch] number for the taxi. It gave us everything that you have, our house, everything'."
He added that he did not choose the number at Newcastle, but the kitman assigned it to him, and he questioned why he did that without asking. The kitman was ready to change it, but the player told him it was what he would have wanted. He explained the story to his father, which brought him to tears.

Why Onana chose 24
Sports Brief reported why Onana retained his number 24 despite the number 1 for most first-choice goalkeepers being vacant after De Gea's departure.
The former Inter Milan goalie kept faith in his usual number, which pays homage to his date of birth and an experience in the only season of his career when he wore number 1.
