Manchester United and Sheffield United players paid tribute to late England World Cup winner Bobby Charlton before the start of their Premier League clash on Saturday.

Charlton's family announced the former midfielder, who scored 49 international goals, had "passed peacefully in the early hours of Saturday morning" at the age of 86.

Charlton was a key member of England's victorious 1966 World Cup team and also enjoyed great success at club level with United, who became the first English club to win the European Cup in 1968.

United captain Bruno Fernandes laid a wreath and a picture of Charlton was shown on a giant screen at Bramall Lane.

The crowd applauded as the players stood around the centre circle.

"It's devastating to be honest with you," midfielder Scott McTominay told Sky Sports before kick-off.

"He was an icon at the football club and all over the world. Everyone knew him from being a legend of the game and, more importantly, such an incredible guy as well."

United manager Erik ten Hag described Charlton as an "outstanding gentleman" on and off the pitch.

United were 10th in the table ahead of kick-off while Sheffield United were rock bottom.
