FootballPremier League: How the Table Would Look Without VAR After 8 Games
- The Matchday nine of the 2023/24 Premier League season is set to kick off this afternoon
- After eight games, North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham are joint top of the table
- There have been quite some VAR controversies which have influenced the results
The Premier League is set to enter its matchday nine after the October international break. After eight games, the league has witnessed enough controversy that the table would have looked different without video assistant referees.
The English league is the most watched in the world and one of the most entertaining, but it is constantly dragged into infamy by officiating decisions and TV schedules.
Despite using VAR, which is believed to reduce human error to its barest minimum, the officiating is still without controversies, particularly offside calls.
Per multiple reports in the English media via Deadline Day Live, the league is considering introducing the semi-automated offside technology, which was used at the 2022 World Cup after initially ruling it out.
Premier League table without VAR
The biggest controversy this season was Liverpool having Luis Diaz's goal against Tottenham wrongly disallowed for offside when he was clearly onside. The PGMOL acknowledged human error, but Liverpool lost the game 2-1 after two red cards.
As analysed by ESPN UK, the league table would have a different outlook if VAR had not existed, with Jurgen Klopp's men leading the log as they would have gotten five points more than they currently have.
Table topper Tottenham would have dropped two places and three points to third, while Arsenal's result would have remained unchanged without the technology.
Chelsea would have overtaken Manchester United and sit ninth even though both teams have 13 points, but the Blues have a superior goal difference.
Seven teams, including bottom-placed Sheffield United and Bournemouth, would remain unchanged, six teams would drop places while the rest have moved at least a place up.
Three talking points from the Premier League
FootballKlopp wants Tottenham Liverpool replayed
Sports Brief reported that Jurgen Klopp wants a replay of the controversial Tottenham vs Liverpool game after PGMOL admitted to human error in wrongly disallowing Luis Diaz's goal.
To make matters worse, the body also confirmed that Diogo Jota should not have been sent off for two bookable offences in 22 seconds, which made Liverpool end the game with nine men after Curtis Jones was earlier sent off.
