- La Liga president Javier Tebas recently lambasted the Saudi league at a conference
The Saudi Pro League has been steadily ascending in recent seasons thanks to its continuous acquisition of elite football stars from around the world.
The Middle Eastern nation is aiming to position itself as one of the world's premier football leagues.
In a recent interview with CNN, the Chief Operating Officer of the Saudi League, Carlo Nohra reiterated the nation's ambition to disrupt the current football landscape with its string of high-profile signings.
On the contrary, La Liga president, Javier Tebas does not seem to share the same vision for the Saudi top flight.
During a recent event in Cadiz, the 61-year-old football mogul expressed his reservations about the Middle Eastern nation's football league, emphasising the 'limited threat' it poses to the Spanish league.
Tebas slams Saudi Pro League
In his comments, via Madrid Universal, Tebas stated:
"The Saudi [Pro] League is not a threat to us because it's a competition that has no history. It has to grow a lot to compete with top leagues."
Tebas's remarks were consistent with his previous stance on the league, where he openly expressed his lack of concern about the Saudi championship.
He also pointed out that the footballing model employed by the league appears to be similar to the unsuccessful models utilised by China and the MLS.
While Europe remains the epicentre of football, it is no coincidence that many countries are attempting to challenge the continent's dominance in the sport.
However, while Tebas has stated the Saudi Pro League won't supplant Europe, its emergence raises concerns, especially amid ongoing financial crisis faced by one its elite clubs - Barcelona.
