- The ex-Super Eagles defender claimed Jose Peseiro's team is not strong enough
- Nigeria have been drawn alongside hosts Ivory Coast and two other top nations
Former Super Eagles defender, George Abbey has spoken on Nigeria's chances of winning the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast next year.
The Super Eagles were drawn in a tricky Group A alongside the host nation, Ivory Coast as well as Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau.
Jose Peseiro's side are aiming to win their fourth AFCON trophy next year after previously winning it in 1980, 1994, and 2013.
In a recent interview, Abbey stated the current Super Eagles are not strong enough to win Africa's biggest football tournament next year, according to a report by The Punch.
"We are patriotic as a country; we forget to check the present weather forecast. This current team is not as strong as our 2013 squad and in my opinion, that team overachieved based on the team they were up against," he said.
The former Crewe Alexandra defender also talked about the recent goalkeeping issues the team is having and added there was no guarantee of the AFCON title even if they had a shot-stopper as good a Nigerian legend.
"Even if we magically produce a prime Vincent Enyeama and put him behind this team, I still wouldn’t back us to win the Africa Cup of Nations. I hope they prove me wrong, but I doubt they will," he added.
