Club football returns this weekend after two weeks of entertaining international football. The Bundesliga has been full of drama, surprises, and entertainment.
It returns this weekend for Matchday 8, and there are a few storylines to look forward to.
Xabi Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen have made a terrific start to the 2023/24 season. They are top of the table with 19 points after seven games. Surprisingly, Stuttgart are second with 18 points, while Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are tied on 17 points.
Bayern narrowly won last season's title on the last day and are looking to make it 12 successive Bundesliga titles this season. Leverkusen look phenomenal so far and will have to maintain that consistency throughout the season if they want to win their first-ever league title.
Alonso's side have not won a trophy in 31 years.
Stuttgart last won the title in 2006/07 and are not doing badly themselves. They have won six of their seven Bundesliga games. Therefore, Leverkusen and Sebastian Hoeneß's team could be the ones to end Bayern's dominance.
VfL Bochum 1848, FSV Mainz 05, and FC Koln occupy the 16th, 17th, and 18th spots in the table. These three teams have not won a single match so far. Koln have lost six and drawn one of their seven matches.
Bundesliga top scorers 2023/24
Serhou Guirassy has been the surprise performer this season, with 13 goals in his first seven games in the Bundesliga with Stuttgart. His hot start has been compared to Mario Gomez, who led Stuttgart to the league title in 2007, so they might be up to something this season, per DW.
Bayern's new striker, Harry Kane, is second on the top scorers list with eight goals, while Leverkusen's Victor Boniface has seven goals.
