- Many have called on the authorities to ban the Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder
- Zungu was shown a straight red, while the injured Parker was rushed to the hospital for medical attention
Football fans have taken to social media to demand the ban of Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Bongani Zungu following his career-ending tackle on Bernard Parker.
Zungu was shown a straight red for his nasty challenge on the TS Galaxy star, who was immediately stretchered off the pitch.
The incident occurred in the 58th minute of the encounter when both players contended for the ball in the middle, but Zungu’s leg stomped on that of Parker.
The Carling Knockout Cup match, which was played at the Mbombela Stadium, ended 2-2 after regulation time, but TS Galaxy won the tie 5-4 after the penalty shootout.
Zungu’s tackle has left some fans fuming on social media, as they called for the 31-year-old to be banned immediately.
Many claim the player did not even show remorse following the tackle.
One said, as per The South African:
"That was disgusting from the tackle to the complaining. Zungu should have to pay 50% of his salary to Parker for as long as he continues to play. Otherwise, he should be banned from playing immediately before he ends other people’s careers."
Another added:
"Instead of disputing the red card decision, he should have immediately rushed to apologize and taken the initiative to call the medical team, as he was well aware of the harm he had inflicted on Parker.
"Horrible tackle by Zungu. Ending someone’s career. Speedy recovery, Parker."
One said:
"Zungu refusing to take accountability for his dangerous challenge and potentially ending Benard Parker's career is infuriating. Ban him for 9 months."
