Neymar Junior is in deep physical and emotional pain, expressing as much after the severity of his injury and the timeline for his recovery and return to action were stated.
The Al-Hilal star was stretchered off during Brazil's 2-0 loss to Uruguay in the CONMEBOL edition of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, after which the worst was confirmed.
The former Paris Saint-Germain attacker suffered a season-ending injury in February, which meant the game against Lille was his last competitive action for the French club before his departure.
Al-Hilal confirm Neymar's injury
Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, who he joined in August, confirmed the injury to Neymar in a statement via social media hours after he was hauled off against Uruguay.
"The medical tests Neymar underwent confirmed the anterior cruciate ligament and meniscus tear injury in his knee. He will be going through surgery and then a treatment program that will be determined later."
No timeline was put forward regarding his recovery but the nature of his injury could sideline him for as many as nine months. Neymar now risks missing the 2024 Copa America.
Neymar breaks silence after injury
The former Barcelona star took to social media to send a message after his injury was confirmed, expressing the depth of his emotional and physical pain.
His words were translated as follows:
"It's a very sad moment, the worst. I know I'm strong, but this time I'm going to need my family and friends even more. It's not easy to go through injury and surgery, imagine going through it all again after 4 months of recovery. I have faith, too much… But I place the strength in God's hands so that he can renew mine. Thank you for the messages of support and affection."
