Jose Peseiro has disclosed why he accepted a pay cut from the Nigeria Football Federation to continue as Super Eagle coach until the next Africa Cup of Nations.
The Portuguese manager took up the helm at the Super Eagles in May 2021 and recently signed a new contract, despite his salary being slashed.
The former FC Porto coach has to fulfil some of the clauses the Nigerian football governing body included in the new contract he signed this year.
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, as per Complete Sports, the Portuguese confirmed that Super Eagles players pushed him to stay as coach as they believe they can win the next AFCON under his tutelage.
"The players pushed me to stay because they believe we can win [AFCON]. We can win it. The players know it. They come with the same energy, the same belief, to fight for the Super Eagles."
Peseiro also disclosed that winning the AFCON is the goal of the team, but they are required to be at their best to defeat top teams like Senegal, Egypt, Cameroon, Algeria, Tunisia, and Morocco.
Nigeria have been set as one of the favourites to win the biggest football tournament in Ivory Coast next year but will face a difficult task right in the group stage.
Peseiro's side have been paired with the host nation Ivory Coast, along with Equatorial Guinea and Guinea-Bissau in a tricky AFCON Group A.
