Joao Cancelo has taken a swipe at his critics with his goal celebration after netting in Portugal’s emphatic 5-0 victory against Bosnia and Herzegovina in their Euro 2024 qualifiers.

The Barcelona defender has been in the eye of the storm recently after being criticised for apparent rudeness towards fans who constantly asked him for autographs.

According to GOAL, Cancelo responded when quizzed on his goal celebrations, stating it was a response to his critics who labelled him 'unprofessional' following the incident in Barcelona.

"My celebration was a slap in the face to those who criticise me. I was always professional. There are those who sell a bad image of me, but it is not true. I have a good heart, and I do everything I can to help Portugal."

Cancelo celebrated his goal against the Eastern Europeans towards the corner flag by sliding on his knees with his arms splayed, days after the autograph controversy in Spain.

Barcelona faces tricky Cancelo situation

Meanwhile, Barcelona’s bid to sign Cancelo long-term could prove difficult for the reigning La Liga champions due to the complications surrounding the deal, The Hard Tackle reports.

Parent club, Manchester City are looking for more than €30 million to offload the Portugal defender permanently - a sum Barcelona will struggle to raise due to their financial constraints.

Cancelo has had a blistering start to his campaign with the Catalan giants, featuring in six league matches so far and returning the investment with two goals and an assist in La Liga.

Cancelo labels Barcelona fans annoying

Earlier, Sports Brief reported on Cancelo continuing to prove his transfer from Man City to Barcelona was one of the standout acquisitions by the Catalans during the summer.

The 29-year-old Portuguese defender consistently impresses the club’s fans and his exceptional performances recently earned him the La Liga 'Goal of the Month' award.

Cancelo’s remarkable displays have led to regular requests from supporters to sign autographs and take photos whenever he arrives at or leaves the club’s training facility.
