Danilo plays football at the professional level. Since he was a youngster, he has played at the very top level. He attended the youth academies of Arsenal, Estoril, and Benfica between 1999 and 2005.

After completing his development with Benfica, the club opted not to sign him professionally, and he moved on to Parma, Italy. He was later loaned out to Greek team Aris for the whole season.

His first game in Serie A was on 21 December 2011 against Catania. The player was loaned back to Eredivisie club Roda. After spending 2012–13 on loan with Roda, he returned to Portugal with Maritimo in 2013.

Throughout two seasons, he played 57 times and contributed four goals. Soon after, he signed with Porto, where he amassed 135 appearances and 35 goals in all competitions. In 2020, he made a loan move to Paris Saint-Germain.

He made around 23 appearances for the team before finally committing to a long-term deal in 2021. His time with PSG continues to the present day. On the international stage, he also plays for the Portuguese national team.
