- Fans have responded to Cristiano Ronaldo surpassing Erling Haaland to claim the position of the top goalscorer in 2023
- The Portugal captain reached this latest hallmark following his first-half brace against Bosnia Herzegovina
- His double against the Dragons sees him overtake Manchester City's Erling Haaland
Football fans erupted with joy on Monday as Cristiano Ronaldo surpassed Erling Haaland as the leading goalscorer for both club and country in 2023.
Ronaldo netted his 39th and 40th goals of the year for Portugal during their UEFA Euro 2024 qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Zenica, leaving Haaland in his wake.
The Manchester City superstar had failed to find the net as Norway suffered a 1-0 home defeat to Spain.
But Ronaldo, 38, continues to defy time and maintains exceptional form for both club and country this year, scoring 31 goals in 35 matches for Al-Nassr this year.
The five-time Ballon d'Or winner added nine more in seven appearances for Roberto Martinez's team, all within the ongoing Euro 2024 qualifiers.
Ronaldo's two-goal performance in the 3-2 victory over Slovakia last Friday secured the Selecao's spot in the Germany finals next year, per Sportskeeda.
Just three days later, the Real Madrid legend's winner marked his 126th and 127th international goals as an electrifying Portugal side stormed to a 5-0 halftime lead at the Bilino Polje in Zenica.

Sports Brief earlier reported that Cristiano Ronaldo struck twice as Roberto Martinez's relentless Portugal thrashed Bosnia and Herzegovina 5-0 on Monday in Euro 2024 qualifying.
Portugal, who booked their place at the tournament in Germany next summer with a win over Slovakia last Friday, continued their superb form under the Spanish coach with their eighth victory in eight games since he arrived.
