  • Barcelona's merchandising sales have improved
  • The club has diversified in the last few months and have seen matchday revenue go up
  • The club is currently struggling financially and are redeveloping Camp Nou

Barcelona had to leave Camp Nou, their home since 1957, to redevelop it this season. They are currently playing at the Olympic Stadium in Barcelona.

With the capacity greatly reduced, matchday revenue and ticketing were expected to plummet. However, the club has made some adjustments to ensure the financial blow isn't as severe.

Through its website, Barcelona announced that they have experienced double-digit growth due to "expansion" and "diversification".

Merchandising revenue doubled from the 2021/22 season to the 2022/23 season, and the 2023/24 season has so far shown promising signs, according to the report by the club.

To counter the expected decline in revenue after moving to Montjuïc, they opened more Barca Stoes in strategic locations in Spain.

Moreover, their second kit, which normally accounts for 20 to 25% of all jersey sales, has increased significantly this year to around 40%. Since it went on sale on July 26, it has accounted for 50% of purchases in Barça Stores.

The club is still undergoing financial troubles, and it will take some time to fully get back to where they were. They are expected to return to the Camp Nou in November 2024, per ESPN.

Barcelona's ailing finance

In the summer of 2021, Barcelona had to let go of then-captain and talismanic forward Lionel Messi after failing to meet La Liga’s financial requirement to register the Argentine.

Despite numerous sales of players and a host of others agreeing to a pay reduction, according to reports from The Athletic, the club’s financial situation appeared to have made little to rebound.

In 2022, the Catalan club were forced to activate a series of economic levers to enable the signing and registration of a few players. These levers are yet to ease the financial woes.

Barca borrow money to fund Camp Nou

Sports Brief earlier reported on Barcelona borrowing €1.45 billion to finance the modernization of Camp Nou.

The Catalans will play at the Olympic Stadium for two seasons as renovation work begins at the end of the 2022/23 season, with the project to be completed by November 2024.

The project, termed Espai Barca, will cost the Catalan club a total of €1.45 billion in loans, which will be paid back over the next 24 years if everything goes according to plan.
