  • Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has opened up on the prospects of reaching 1,000 career goals
  • Currently standing on 857 goals, Ronaldo is 143 goals shy of reaching the near-impossible landmark
  • But he chose to be generous with his response despite his brace against Slovakia in the Euro Qualifiers

Cristiano Ronaldo provided a straightforward response when asked about the possibility of reaching 1,000 career goals after aiding Portugal in qualifying for Euro 2024.

Ronaldo, likely to be remembered as football's most prolific player of all time, scored twice in Portugal's 3-2 win against Slovakia, securing the Selecao's spot in next summer's European Championship with three games to spare.

With numerous remarkable goal-scoring accomplishments, including holding the prestigious record of being the UEFA Champions League's all-time top scorer and the leading scorer in men's international football, the 38-year-old is expected to add a few more before retiring from his illustrious career.

Among the many goal-scoring milestones the former Real Madrid goal-scoring machine is eager to achieve, reaching the near-unattainable 1,000 career goal mark stands out.

When asked about the possibility of attaining this significant milestone, Cristiano, currently at 857 career goals, according to MessivsRonaldo, humbly responded.

“1000 career goals? He quipped as quoted by Football Tweet.

Instead of being overly ambitious, the Al-Nassr star, favouring modesty, opted to establish a more achievable target before aiming for the illustrious 1000 mark.

"The Porto president gave me that challenge, but I want to reach 900 career goals first.”

Ronaldo reaches new goal-scoring landmark

Continuing his goal-scoring spree, Cristiano Ronaldo achieved significant milestones with his brace against Slovakia, ensuring Portugal's qualification for Euro 2024, Sports Brief reported.

According to ESPN, the goals marked his 699th and 700th, excluding penalties, an impressive feat for a player occasionally nicknamed Penaldo by fans for his penalty prowess.

If he maintains his fitness and remains part of the squad in Germany next year, he will make history as the first player to participate in six European Championships, having previously featured in 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, and 2020.

Ronaldo tops highest-paid player list

Sports Brief also reported that based on the latest Forbes ranking, Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo stands as the highest-paid player of 2023, considering his total on-field earnings.

Forbes compiled the ranking by factoring in players' salaries, bonuses, potential club-image rights, licensing, off-field estimates, and businesses run by the players.

In December last year, Ronaldo inked an extraordinary deal worth $200 million per year with the Saudi Professional Football League club Al Nassr.
