  • The 2-1 win helped Les Bleus qualify for Euro 2024 next year in Germany
  • Mbappe celebrated differently than his usual mode, and the reason has now been explained

Kylian Mbappe helped France qualify for Euro 2024 by scoring both goals in France's 2-1 win over the Netherlands and celebrated unusually, and the reason has now been explained.

France have won six of six games in the group stage of the qualifying campaign and are now guaranteed a spot in Germany next year even if they pick no point again.

Les Bleus came into the match knowing they had a point to prove after Dutch boss Ronald Koeman used Newcastle's 4-1 Champions League win over Paris Saint-Germain to make an example that his team could secure a win.

The PSG star probably took those words personally and ensured the Dutch were beaten at home, even though it is believed he had other motivations.

Why Mbappe celebrated differently against Netherlands?

The French captain usually celebrates by folding his arms, but last night, he did so by pointing to the sky as a tribute to a family member who passed away days ago.

According to L'Equipe, he was allowed to leave Claire Fontaine days ago to visit his family but returned in time to make the trip to Amsterdam for the crucial tie.

The 24-year-old shared a photo of himself on Instagram pointing to the sky and captioned it with three emojis, suggesting grief over the death of a loved one. His brother Ethan commented with three heart emojis.

It was also a night of milestones for the former Monaco star; as per BBC Sports, his two goals helped him surpass former UEFA president Michel Platini on the list of France's all-time top scorers with 42 goals.

He sits fourth, only behind Antoine Griezmann (44), Thierry Henry (51) and Olivier Giroud (54).

Ferdinand picks Mbappe over Haaland

Sports Brief reported that Rio Ferdinand picked Mbappe over Haaland as the better all-round player among the two superstars touted to be the heir apparent to Messi and Ronaldo.

Ferdinand applauded Erling Haaland as a crazy goalscorer but boldly claimed that by the end of their careers, the France international would be the better player.
