- The Manchester United midfielder scored the setpiece from an impossible angle
- McTominay, who scored twice against Spain in the return leg, was left fuming by the decision
Scott McTominay was denied a beautiful free-kick goal from an impossible angle by the Video Assistant Referee(VAR) under very controversial circumstances.
The midfielder scored the goal for his Scottish side during their Euro 2024 qualifier game against Spain at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Sevilla on October 12.
The Manchester United star came into this game on the back of the quickfire stoppage time brace against Brentford over the weekend. He stood over the freekick near the byline in the 60th minute, with many expecting him to try and find a teammate in the area.
McTominay's freekick
Instead, he went for goal, catching Unai Simon unawares with the shot, finding the back of the net. The VAR, however, ruled that a Scotland player, Jack Hendry, was impeding Simon, and thus the goal was chalked off.
As talkSPORT reports, McTominay hammered his water bottle to the ground after the decision was confirmed. His frustration was compounded as Alvaro Morata opened the scoring 14 minutes later.
Atletico Bilbao's Oihan Sancet completed the scoring four minutes from time to take Luis De la Fuente's side to within three points of the Scots with a game in hand.
Spain play Erling Haaland's Norway next. The Manchester City ace scored twice as they beat Cyprus 4-0 on Thursday night as well. Norway are two points behind Spain in the qualification spots but have played a game more.

Manchester United looked on course to fall to yet another defeat at the hands of the Bees at Old Trafford courtesy of Mathias Jensen's calamitous opener before McTominay stepped in.
Speaking after the match, the United academy graduate said the Dutchman told him to go on and score.
