CD Tenerife winger, Omorinsola Babajide has dumped England and chosen to represent the Super Falcons of Nigeria on the international stage.
The 25-year-old was born in London, England, to Nigerian parents, which gives her the option to represent either the Three Lionesses or the Super Falcons at the international level.
The former Liverpool forward had represented the England Women's team at the Under-19, Under-20, and Under-21 levels.
She was part of the team that won a bronze medal at the 2018 FIFA Under-20 Women's World Cup, which was hosted by France.
However, the England-born player was happy to receive her maiden call-up to the Nigeria Women's national team setup and took to her official page on Instagram to react to it, according to Daily Trust.
“I’m grateful and blessed to have received a call-up for the Olympic Qualifiers; the love I’ve been feeling has been very overwhelming. Thank you so much #Honoured #SuperFalcons,” she said.
She is teammates with Monday Gift and Esther Okoronkwo in Tenerife, with the trio forming a deadly attack for the Spanish side.
Babajide had a good time at the club level in England as she played for the likes of Crystal Palace, Millwall Lionesses, Watford, Liverpool, and Brighton & Hove Albion before moving to Spain.
She joined Real Betis in 2022, and after one season with them, she joined Tenerife.
Super Falcons players on unpaid wages
Sports Brief earlier reported that some members of the Super Falcons of Nigeria squad for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup have expressed frustrations over their treatment by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF).
More than six weeks after the global showpiece, some Super Falcons players who asked to be anonymous claim they have received less than half of their daily camp wages and no match bonuses.
It was further gathered that the Nigerian Women are yet to receive $60,000 (£49,000) of FIFA money owed to each player for reaching the round of 16.
