  • French striker Olivier Giroud has been listed as the Serie A goalkeeper of the week
  • The AC Milan star made a crucial save for his side after Mike Maignan was sent off
  • Romelu Lukaku scored twice against Cagliari to also make the 'Team of the Week'

Oliver Giroud's moment of unprecedented fame is now set to continue after he was included in the Serie A team of the week as - get this - a goalkeeper.

Giroud is always making headlines for his contribution up the field as a striker, but this weekend against Genoa, he captured the hearts of football fans when he stepped in as AC Milan's shot-stopper.

Mike Maignan was sent off in stoppage time, forcing an outfield player to don the gloves since Stefano Pioli had already made his five changes.

The Rossoneri were only ahead by a solitary goal scored by Christian Pulisic. Sensing the opportunity to capitalise on the lack of a proper goalkeeper, Genoa rained on Milan's goal in an attempt to get a late equaliser.

Giroud's heroics as a temp goalkeeper

However, the French striker thwarted George Puscas with a daring double save. The save saw Milan maintain their clean sheet and claim maximum points to ascend to the top of the Serie A table.

It is this heroic effort that has seen the former Chelsea striker included in the Serie A team of the week as a goalkeeper. He had a 100% save rate and kept his goal unbreached.

He is joined by AS Roma trio of Romelu Lukaku, Leandro Paredes, and Leonardo Spinazzola, who contributed to the huge 4-1 win over Cagliari Calcio.

Frosinone duo, Matias Soule and Reinier also featured alongside Lazio's Taty Castellanos and Matias Vecino, who starred in their 3-2 win over Atalanta.

Ibrahimovic sends message to Giroud

Sports Brief also reported on Zlatan Ibrahimovic hailing former teammate Giroud as his heroic goalkeeping efforts continue to make the headlines.

AC Milan have taken full advantage of the situation, adding the Frenchman to listed goalkeepers and then printing goalkeeper shirts with his name.

Ibrahimovic then reshared a video of the club printing the jersey worn by Giroud as a goalkeeper and added a cheeky caption requesting one.
